I’m 47 and have been having the odd Botox injection for years without my husband knowing. We both work, we don’t have any children and I spend my own money on it. And he tells me regularly that I look fantastic. I feel a bit guilty for deceiving him. Do you think it’s wrong not to tell him?

New drug could shrink inherited breast and ovarian cancers VICKI Secrets and lies-wise, I’ve always gone for total transparency within the married state. I was a child of the 1960s, anyway, when letting it all hang out was more or less obligatory. One was chided for being repressed or ‘holding on’. So my poor old spouse knows more about boudoir matters than any red-blooded male has desire to. It doesn’t seem to have turned him off, but perhaps he’s good at hiding his feelings. About once a month, I say, ‘Shall I Botox now? Is it time?’ and he says, ‘Don’t be bloody ridiculous.’ Which is sweet, because it is time, frankly

OCTAVIA Are you mad? Deceiving him? Do you feel the need to tell him which anti-wrinkle cream you use? Have you shown him your anti-cellulite arsenal? Do you talk him through your use of stomach-holding-in pants? Anything you do to achieve your own (or society’s) vision of youthful beauty is your prerogative. Plus, if you start telling people who don’t know about Botox that you have it, they start wittering about ‘most toxic substance known to man’ and ‘untested long-term effects’ (even though it’s been around for decades and no one witters when it’s used to help kids with cerebral palsy)
